A new overpass will be built at Plantation Oaks Boulevard to provide better traffic flow for State Road 23 by separating through traffic from the residential traffic circulating within Oakleaf Plantation. The two-lane 230-foot long overpass will be built just south of the existing intersection. The overpass will also provide sidewalks for pedestrians and bicyclists.
History: This is just one part of an overall plan to create an outer beltway around the west side of Jacksonville between Interstates 10 and 95. This beltway will provide relief for busy Blanding Boulevard (State Road 21) and other north-south roadways. The latest segment of the beltway to open was a 5-mile long section between Interstate 10 and 103rd Street which opened October 1, 2009.
The retaining wall construction on the project has expanded to include the center wall section between the Park Road bridge and the State Road 23 overpass and the wall sections on the west end of the project, in addition to the east end of the project. There are more than 51,000 square feet of wall to place. A temporary roadway has been paved and traffic is expected to be shifted during the week of March 8 at which time the contractor will begin to tie the new road into the existing Plantation Oaks Boulevard.
The project allows young workers to gain valuable experience through the highway worker training program. One of those young workers is Alexander Brown, a 19-year old who lives in the Middleburg area and who recently graduated from high school. He was hired by Superior Construction Company to learn the tools of the trade to become a concrete form setter. These skills will enhance his ability in the work force.
